The River City High School community joins with the entire City of West Sacramento in mourning the passing of Teresa Blackmer on Sunday, July 29. Teresa was a fixture in the district and in the community, and she will be greatly missed. Teresa was an employee of WUSD from 1973-2008, notably as a long-time campus aide at River City. She influenced and supported so many River City students over the years. She was a Trustee for the district from 2008-2012, serving as Board President in 2012. Teresa was past-president of the CSEA bargaining unit and a strong advocate for classified employees. She was active in youth athletics, the VFW, and supported family members and students with enthusiasm and energy in countless hours of service. Our condolences go out to Teresa’s family and friends.

Services are as follows:

River City Funeral Home

Viewing will be Friday, Aug. 3rd from 6-8pm

Memorial Service will be Saturday, Aug. 4th from 10:30-11:30 am, Burial will be at 1pm at the Saint Mary's Cemetery.

Celebration of Live will be Sunday, Aug. 5th at the West Sac VFW Hall at 1pm

River City's jazz band, The Syncopating Sea Monkeys, earned unanimous superior ratings at the prestigious Reno Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 28. This is monumental accomplishment for us, as this festival draws over 350 groups and Reno officials are notoriously stingy with their scores. Additionally, we had the added challenge of an early morning 7:40 am performance time!

These scores qualify us to apply to the Monterey Next Gen Jazz Festival 2019!

We wish to celebrate the wonderful success of our music department. In the past week, our Wind Ensemble earned unanimous superior ratings at the Golden Empire Music Festival and our Advanced Vocal Ensemble performed in Disneyland. On Saturday May 5, our Orchestra performs at Diablo Valley College. Congratulations to Felicia Weatherly, Tony Marvelli, and Linda Cristman for continuously striving and inspiring everyone at River City to push beyond what we would seemingly be able to accomplish.

Dear RCHS Raider community

As you know, three weeks ago there was a terrible and tragic school shooting in Florida.  Like all of you, staff at River City High School were appalled by this terrible tragedy.    In the past weeks we have seen a heightened sense of concern regarding school safety, and we have also seen many lockdowns in our area including one at RCHS.

The lockdown at River City was a frightening experience at its worst and a staggering school disruption at its least.  Many major lessons were learned about what does work, what doesn’t work, and what needs to work better.  Starting immediately, RCHS is undergoing major additions and revisions to the existing school safety plan as well as other improvements.  In addition, we will continue to meet with parents to gain insights and hear concerns.

There were also positive lessons learned as well, and our staff cannot do enough to thank our West Sacramento Police Dept for their immediate response and diligence.  Resiliency and strength are the cornerstones of being an RCHS Raider and our community, staff, students, and parents showed plenty of those traits during this lockdown incident.

Moving forward, there have been many reports on social media organizing protests or school walk outs  on March 14.  Our staff does respect student rights to express themselves, but only in a safe manner that doesn’t disrupt the learning environment of the school. Furthermore the Washington Unified School District will not endorse or support any particular political view or advocacy group.   The best way for students to make a positive impact toward school climate is to actively be a part of the school community.

Working together with staff and students we will celebrate our community unity on March 14.  A display is being created to pay respect and honor school shooting victims not just from Florida but from previous incidents as well.  We will also pay respect to victims and show our thanks for our own safety with a moment of silence.  This moment of silence will be followed with our staff going over with students resources they can access including counseling and how to contact representatives.  Our goal will be to engage the students, listen to them, and support them.

In the meantime our staff will work diligently, and do all it can to ensure safety and promote a positive school climate. We look forward to seeing all our students tomorrow.

If you have any concerns about events or protests please do not hesitate to contact our staff either directly or by email and we will do our absolute best to address your concerns.

Respectfully,

Stan Mojsich

During first period Monday, River City High School went into lockdown and later into an early release/evacuation of the campus due to an anonymous voicemail threat left on the campus message system. West Sacramento Police were on campus immediately, and students were never in any danger. Students and staff cooperated with West Sac PD and the campus was cleared by about 3pm.

On Monday afternoon the West Sacramento Police Department Investigations unit arrested a male juvenile who attends River City High School for a violation of California Penal Code section 422, making Criminal Threats, which is a felony.

If any members of the public have any further information regarding this incident, we encourage you to contact the West Sacramento Police Department at (916) 375-6275.

Please be advised that school will be back in session Tuesday, which also happens to be a previously scheduled collaboration minimum day.

We know how difficult this type of ordeal is to cope with—school counselors and support personnel will be available on campus to assist teachers and students tomorrow and throughout the remainder of the week as needed.

Please do not hesitate to contact the RCHS main office at (916) 375-7800 with additional questions.

The Raiders won all three judges' ballots. Hunter Cradit was chosen MVP of the round by our opponents.

In Round 1, River City faced a formidable Del Campo team and lost on all three judges' ballots. Melina Dhillon was chosen MVP by the Del Campo team. Round 2 against St. Francis was much closer in points, 51% to 49%, but we still lost on all three ballots. Calvin McGee was selected MVP in that round.

Round 4 pairings for Wednesday, Feb. 21 are to be determined. On Saturday, Feb. 24 at 9am, River City faces Da Vinci Charter from Davis for the Yolo County Championship at the Sacramento County Courthouse.

Coaches and supporters celebrate after Michelle Kamyshin earned her championship. (from left to right) RCHS head coach Jason Stolpe, Francise Harrell, Michelle Kamyshin, James Andrus, Hayden Scarbrough and Joe Luna

By Raider Reporters. Shockwaves of excitement rippled through the River City athletic community as a sophomore wrestler faced down some tough competition and came out on top.

Michelle Kamyshin took 1st place in the 150 weight class of the Girls Wrestling Northern Regional Meet that took place on Feb. 2nd and 3rd at Natomas High School.

What made her run to 1st place so impressive was that as a 5th seeded wrestler she defeated the 4th, 1st and 2nd seeded competitors to take the championship.

“I was the underdog,” said Kamyshin, “who stepped up and made those around me proud.”

The title qualifies her to compete in the San-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament on Feb. 16th and 17th at McNair High School in Stockton. Top finishers at Masters then qualify for the State Championships in Visalia.

Regardless of the meets ahead and her future success, Kamyshin has found a passion in wrestling and being a part of the RCHS team.

“Wrestling has changed me. This sport has helped me more than anyone can imagine. I don’t know where I would be without it.”

The deadline to apply for the Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program is Friday February 2. There will be no deadline extensions. Students can apply for the program by going to www.bankofamerica.com/studentleaders.

Since its inception in 2005, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 2,500 exemplary high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for improving their communities.  The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:

  • A summer eight-week paid internship with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization.
  • The week-long, all-expense paid Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. from July 8-13, 2018. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the recent passing of Mr. Harold Sorrell.

Mr. Sorell was 81 years old and passed away on January 3rd due to a long-time illness. He began working for Washington Unified in September of 1964 and retired from the WUSD on January 31, 2002, returning briefly in 2011 as a substitute. At Mr. Sorrell's request, no services were held.

Mr. Sorrell was a valued member of the River City and WUSD community having spent 41 years as a teacher, coach, drivers education instructor, resource specialist, and home teacher. His tireless dedication to his work and his impact on students goes unmatched. Mr. Sorrell will be sorely be missed by his family, friends, and everyone he touched throughout his many years in our community.

Tennis coach and teacher Dave Brooks remembered Hal: "I knew him for over 35 years.  He taught me how to drive when I was 15, mentored me when I was a new River City Special Education teacher, and then subbed for me when he retired. Legendary sense of humor.  One of my all-time RC favorites."

Hal will be greatly missed, and our thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time.

River City High School presents It's a Wonderful Life, a live radio play Thu-Sat Dec 7-10

This beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. Due to some adult content (discussion of suicide, etc.) as well as the slower pace of the action, the show is not recommended for children.

Dates and times:

Thu. December 7th 2017, 7:00 pm

Fri. December 8th 2017, 7:00 pm

Sat. December 9th 2017, 3:00 pm

Sun. December 10th 2017, 3:00 pm

Pricing

Adult - $8.00

Student - $6.00

Running Time: 90 minutes

To commemorate the 230th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787, River City will join schools around the country to observe National Constitution Day on Monday, September 18. Congress established Constitution Day in 2004 with the mandate that all public schools provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution. The weeks of September 18-29 are also California Voter Education Weeks. In California, students can pre-register to vote as early as age 16 (although they can’t cast a ballot until they turn 18).

All members of the River City community can help fulfill Congress's mandate by at least acknowledging the day with their students and highlighting the importance of being knowledgeable about our government, our rights, and our obligations as citizens.

Washington Unified Reassures Community in Response to DACA Repeal

WEST SACRAMENTO—The Washington Unified School District (WUSD) today issued a statement regarding the President’s decision to suspend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that protects undocumented children of immigrants from deportation.

This recent decision is a cause for concern creating a multitude of emotional responses from our students and families uncertain of the impact this will have in their lives.

Our schools always have been and will continue to be the cornerstone of our community providing our hard-working families the opportunity to pursue their dreams of a successful future.

The Washington Unified School District together with countless other local and statewide agencies will continue to support and protect ALL students regardless of their immigration status upholding our Safe Haven Resolution approved by the Board of Trustees on February 16, 2017.

We are fully committed to supporting our families with any concerns for their future.

Each school has a support system and staff in place to help our students with any anxiety or fear. Each school is staffed with a part-time Social Worker and Outreach Specialists in addition to our teachers, campus safety monitors, support staff and administration. Please talk to your children about the safety and support staff available at school. Our employees stand ready to support and help.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Tuesday that the Trump Administration is rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an American immigration policy created by the Obama administration in June 2012. DACA allows certain undocumented immigrants who entered the country as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for a work permit. The Attorney General stated that no action would be taken until after 6 months have elapsed, potentially allowing Congress to take some action before March 5, 2018.

Understandably, students may be concerned about their own status or that of a loved one or friend. Some resources and links are attached here. If you have questions, staff members Cynthia Cisneros (Room 703) and Estella DeLaTorre (Career Center) are available for assistance. You are not alone, and you have support on our campus.

Congratulations to the 134 Seniors this year who took the SBAC tests last spring and met or exceeded standards in BOTH Math and ELA! If your student’s name appears on this list, please have them come in to the Assistant Principal’s office with their ID card for the Academic Discount sticker. The sticker gets students into all home athletic events for free and get discounts to other school events. We are thrilled to have so many students qualify for this incentive.  Great job, Raiders!

(EdSource, Aug. 29, 2017) The California Department of Education now hopes to publicly release statewide results of the Smarter Balanced assessments in math and reading by Sept. 13, after a delay caused by inaccurate data received from its test contractor.

The new date is more than two weeks later than the originally expected public release date of Aug. 29. The department first announced the postponement last Friday, citing a “recently identified data issue.” At that time, no new date was announced.

By Tuesday, department officials clarified that results for about 25,000 special education students “had been associated with a different district from where they were tested,” causing the department to recalculate the statewide data. The department discovered the problem after sending test results to the more than 1,000 local districts “during a preview period to ensure accuracy of the information when it is released to the public,” said department spokesman Bill Ainsworth.

However, he added that results provided to districts through the state’s Online Reporting System “are accurate.”

WUSD is requesting that all staff and adults working with students on campus have and wear a District ID.  This would include all current staff members, coaches, current volunteers, classroom aides.

To help make this easier, District personnel will be on the River City Campus on Wednesday, September 6th from 11:30 to 3:00 in the large Conference Room.  If you do not work on campus, you should check in at the front desk and we will send you to the designated area.  If you are not able to make this date, you may stop by Human Resources at the District Office between 8 and 3:00 and ask for Alex.

[The Sacramento Bee, August 27, 2017. By Laura Brill.] The health of our democracy depends on widespread participation. We all need an understanding of how our public institutions function and how to make our voices heard.

But our country suffers from a serious deficit in basic civic knowledge. Political engagement by young voters is especially low. With the start of the school year just around the corner, it is sobering to realize how much more we need to do to address these problems....

That citizens can pre-register to vote beginning at age 16 is one of the best kept secrets in California. Our 16 and 17 year olds spend most of their waking hours (at least once summer ends) in high school. Emails and website links from high schools encouraging these kids to register to vote would seem to be the bare minimum schools should eagerly do to encourage civic engagement.
